THE VOLUNTEER

A real squash came up in a Michigan lawn — nobody planted it. Gardeners call that a volunteer. Five kinds of squash sleep in this packet. Every one starts the same way.

HOW TO GROW

Sowing2–3 seeds to a hill after the last frost; thin to the strongest sprout
Waterdeep & slow, ~1 inch a week — count to ten while you pour
Caremulch around the plant, never against the stem
Flowersboy and girl blossoms — a bee must carry pollen boy → girl. No bee, no squash
Harvestknock: ripe sounds like a little drum. Cut, don't yank — leave a stem handle
Know your seedling: two round leaves first (the seed's packed lunch), then big scratchy true leaves. The root grew down before anything came up.

This mix holds five kinds — Golden Crookneck, Butternut, Acorn, Pattypan, Zucchini. You won't know which you've grown until it swells. Grow all five.
